Homeschool Co-ops

What is a homeschool co-op? It is a group of families who meet together and work towards common goals. Co-ops are usually organized around academics, arts, or extracurricular activities. The classes and activities that a co-op offers depend on the individual co-op. In some co-ops parents take turns teaching different subjects (Mr. Moore might teach his favorite subject - science, while Ms. Kasey teaches math) or they may all chip in to pay some of the tutors. Co-ops can be as small as 2 or 3 families, or as large as a few hundred children - it all depends on the purpose, location, and  co-op leaders. We are fortunate in Kalamazoo to have a few of these organizations which provide support to parents by offering classes in a variety of subjects. Kalamazoo Heart, the Kalamazoo Area Tutors and The Learning Community all offer quality tutoring on a regular basis.

Co-ops can meet anywhere. Some co-ops are in churches, homes, or community centers, while others have their own building. They may meet anywhere from 1-3 times a week to only once a month. It’s all up to the co-op organizers. Children in the co-ops do most of their learning outside of the co-op at home, but some co-ops may have homework. Co-op is another experience that builds knowledge, adds an activity and provides children with another group of friends.

Co-op is not the same as a homeschool group. Homeschool groups tend to do field trips, park days, parent support meetings, talent night, book clubs, robotics club, parties, and more. Some co-ops may have an official group that they are associated with, but the group members may not need to belong to co-op in order to participate in field trips, etc. Sometimes larger homeschool groups have a co-op that is one of their smaller regular activities. In the end, it is up to you if your family will participate in co-op, but if you choose to do so, Kalamazoo has several co-ops nearby.
